The man across the table is glancing at me repeatedly, and I’m surprised that his parents haven’t noticed just how much attention he’s showing me.

I push my plate aside and get up from the table slowly.

“Are you done eating?” Mr. Gillman asks me.

“Yes,” I tell him just above a whisper as he begins to collect the plates.

“Sit down, you have her for a reason,” Mrs. Gillman states as sweetly as she can, and yet she wouldn’t let me lift a finger earlier.

“There is such a thing called respect, Mother. She may be my maid, but she’s not my slave, and there’s no reason why I can’t gather the plates and bring them inside.” Mr. Gillman reminds her of her place, his tone is deep, and I can see his jaw clenching slightly.
